Creative Europe MEDIA Desk Croatia proudly announces that screenwriter Mile Božičević took part in the European Writers Desk programme as the sole representative from Croatia. This initiative of the Creative Europe MEDIA Desks brings together film authors from across Europe with the aim of strengthening creative collaboration, exchanging working methods, and building a network of screenwriters operating beyond conventional national and linguistic frameworks.
Launched four years ago by twenty national CE MEDIA Desks, European Writers Desk today connects around 90 screenwriters from all over Europe. Throughout the year, participants engage in online meetings and professional exchanges, while a focused in-person session is organised once annually. After previous editions held in Copenhagen, Hamburg and Brussels, this year’s gathering took place in Stockholm, from 13 to 15 August 2025, in the form of an intensive workshop dedicated to developing author-driven projects through the method of structural film constellations.
Unlike traditional approaches to screenplay development, this method is based on the idea that characters, motifs, and thematic axes of a story can be placed physically in space, allowing the narrative to step out of the written word and become experiential—visible, spatial and sensorial. By observing the relationships between elements in the room, authors gain insight into the emotional and subconscious structures of their stories, often hidden within standard table-based analysis.
The workshop was led by three highly respected experts. Prof. Matthias Varga von Kibéd, logician and philosopher, and author of the SySt® – Systemic Structural Constellations method, provided the theoretical foundation and deep understanding of narrative patterns operating beneath the surface structure of a story. Carl Javér, director best known for his film Reconstructing Utøya, contributed his experience of working with narrative through space and embodied story exploration, creating a safe and intuitive environment for creative investigation. Fredrik Lange, producer and dramaturge from the Swedish production company Vilda Bomben Film, guided participants in translating intuitive insights into concrete dramaturgical choices and production-aware film structures.
Within such a context, participants reportedly experienced tangible breakthroughs in the development of their projects – and according to Mile Božičević, the process was both creatively productive and personally transformative:
“Attending the European Writers Desk workshop in Stockholm was a very valuable and useful experience. The organising team was excellent in every aspect; welcoming, well prepare, and consistently supportive. The cohort brought together ambitious and accomplished screenwriters from across Europe, which made the atmosphere energising and inspiring.
It was my first time working with “constellations” as a tool for developing characters and other aspects of the story. The method clarifies your core ideas and briefly makes you aware of where in the subconscious your choices come from and what you are actually trying to say. During the sessions, several people, including myself, experienced real “aha” moments as their stories evolved and the focus moved.
What helped me most was the set of tools we can use on our own. Although structural constellations work best in a group, the solo adaptations offer a rich way to approach storytelling and deepen our understanding of the worlds we’re building. Even when the language can sound a bit esoteric, the results were concrete for everyone. It’s a good reminder that, in telling stories, we can (and should) use the body too, not just our heads and hands.”
Mile Božičević’s participation in this programme stands as yet another sign of the active involvement of Croatian authors in European creative processes, and highlights the importance of international platforms that create opportunities for knowledge exchange, methodological innovation and new forms of creative networking.
